Gary O’Rourke Retires

Thirty-five years ago a young man took a custodial job at his old grade school, little dreaming that one day he would retire from that same place!  On October 30 Gary O’Rourke will retire as the longest-serving staff member of Trinity ever (passing up even people like Pastor Kunze, 30 years, and Jean Prochnow, our Kindergarten teacher for 33 years).  We’ll be celebrating Gary’s 35 years of service with a reception and a gift on November 3 in the gym,  following the 11am worship service.  If Gary’s ministry here has touched your life, you’re invited to participate in the gift by making a contribution.  You can either put something in the offering plate marked “Gary’s Retirement” or bring your gift to the church/school office.  Please contribute by Sunday, October 27 so that we can make the purchase.

Clayton W. McCoy, Jr.

Clayton (Clay) William McCoy, Jr., 75, of Winter Park, FL, passed away October 4, 2013 in Orlando, FL.  Clay and his wife of 50 years, Lynne,  were members of Trinity for 46 years.  Both their children, Lisa and Patrick, were baptized at Trinity and daughter Lisa was confirmed and married at Trinity.  Clay was an active member of the church for many years.    He had a long and successful career as a University of Florida Professor and Researcher in Entomological Biological Control at IFAS Citrus Research & Education Center in Lake Alfred, FL.   He retired from this position in 2005 after a 33-year career. Clay’s research and teaching took him to all corners of the globe, whether to present at scientific conferences or to provide consultation to citrus growers and government institutions. However, he felt the most gratifying aspect of his career was his interaction with his colleagues, graduate students and staff.  In his retirement, he co-authored Pathogens Infecting Insects & Mites of Citrus with colleagues, and enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends. Clay is survived by his wife  Lynne, of Winter Park, FL; his daughter Lisa McCoy (Brian Buchner) of Oviedo, FL; his son Patrick, of Minneapolis, MN; his niece Julie McCoy Elmer (Steve) of Fairfax, MN; and nephews Todd McCoy and Scott McCoy of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Donn R. McCoy.

His funeral will be held in his hometown of Fairfax, MN on October 28, 2013.

There will be a local memorial service at 2 p.m.  on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Mead Botanical Garden (1300 S. Denning Dr., Winter Park – behind St. John’s Lutheran on 17-92) in Winter Park conducted by former Trinity Pastor Milan Weerts.  Following the service there will be a reception at the Winter Park Garden Club clubhouse that is located at Mead Garden.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Parkinson Disease Foundation www.pdf.org.  For additional information, please contact Lisa McCoy at lkmccoy@cfl.rr.com or 407-963-8970.

Trinity Shares Christmas

We have received the names of Angel Tree children from 16 families, and the Trinity Shares Christmas tree will be up in the narthex throughout November – we’re hoping to see the angel ornaments disappear as quickly as they did last year!  The caregivers who have been contacted are very appreciative; some shared that they were struggling to meet expenses and would not be able to buy Christmas presents this year.  One lady tearfully asked, “Will I be able to meet the people who are doing this so I can say thank you?”

The tree has ornaments for presents, gift cards, food items, wrapping paper, and money donations – something for everyone!  If you are able to help with this program, please take one or more ornaments, write your name and the ornament code number on the notepad next to the tree, and return the requested item (unwrapped, with the ornament) to the narthex no later than Sunday, November 24.  Please do not peel the backing off the ornament – it is used only for sorting gifts.

Thank you to Deaconess Liz and to those who have volunteered with help and supplies – Janine Delehunt, Cindy Fabry, Sheila Mathews, Joyce Phillips, Maria Reyes-Ku, Darlene Sabin, Linda Short, Cathy Simmons, Lisa Warren, and Kathy Wise.

If you have any questions about Trinity Shares Christmas, or if you would like to help with deliveries in December, please contact Glenda Frazier at whitemice@bellsouth.net.

A New Member of Maintenance Staff

Please join me in welcoming John Wilkeson to the Trinity staff.  John has joined our Maintenance team and started this week.

John comes to us with several years of facility maintenance experience.  He worked for nearly 10 years at Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts where he was responsible for general maintenance and housekeeping.  John has also worked for commercial electrical contractors and is a Certified Home Inspector.  He comes with a well rounded set of skills and experience that I feel will greatly benefit Trinity and complement our Maintenance department.

John is married and has a 21 month year old daughter and is excited to be part of our team.

He will have some very big shoes to fill, so please be sure to say hello and extend a warm welcome to John when you see him around campus!

October Chapel Offering

For the Month of October, we will be collecting various items for our military. Many of these things will simply be fun things for wounded soldiers and military people who are far away from home. To show our appreciation for them we are asking students to bring various items each week to chapel. We will give them a little handout with a specific item, so they know what to bring.

Then, in November for Veteran’s Day, we will be donating our collection to OPERATION GRATITUDE who will ship them to the military wherever they might be.

The Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough Fundraiser is underway!  Information packets and order forms were sent home Monday.  Cookie Dough makes great holiday gifts for friends and co-workers or an easy and delicious treat for your family.   If a student sells 10 or more tubs, he/she will receive one free tub of Chocolate Chip cookie dough free!  Order forms are due November 4th and delivery will take place at the end of November.  Please consider supporting the Music Department by participating in the sale!!

“Operation Gratitude” Remembers Soldiers this Halloween Season

·          Did you buy too much candy and have some leftover?

·           Did your children bring home too many sweet treats?

·           Are you willing to donate candy for a wonderful cause?

This year our school is supporting Operation Gratitude in an effort to save lives, lift morale and put smiles on the faces of American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines.

Operation Gratitude assembles and ships 100,000+ Care Packages each year to deployed troops and Wounded Warriors. These packages contain a variety of items we often take for granted, including candy.

Please send in any pieces or bags of candy that you’re willing to donate!  We ask that all candy be sent in either a baggie or another type of plastic bag.  There is a collection box set up in the front office.

Sometimes a sweet piece of home can go a long way.  Every little bit helps!  Thank you for supporting our U.S. Service Members!

OR

Some dentists are paying $1.00 per pound for your candy and then sending it to the military personnel overseas through the Operation Gratitude program.  Our school offering for the month of October is to support this program.  Wow!  Share your candy, prevent cavities, and get paid!  Call your dentist and see if he or she is participating.

Bible Study for TLS Parents

Looking for a place to get into His Word?  Trinity is starting up a new home bible study group focused for the school families.  We have not determined a day of the week, a time, frequency, or even where at this point in time.  The first step is to gather names of people that are interested in getting involved and studying His Word.  Interested?  Contact Eric Havens at 1-321-368-6336 or email at eric-havens@comcast.net and provide me your name(s).  Prayerfully consider this opportunity and let Eric know you are interested.

CDC Family News

Weekly note from Patty Moser, CDC Director

I hope everyone is having a great week and looking forward to some cooler weather that should be heading our way by Thursday. I will be out of the office on Thursday and Friday.  Debbie and Gay will be here to handle any questions or concerns you may have.

I would like to take a moment to recognize someone that has been a part of our Trinity family for a very long time.  After 35 Years of service at Trinity Lutheran Church and school, “Mr. Gary” as your children know him, is retiring.  As adults on campus we can always count on Gary to make us laugh with a quick joke, help with an emergency, fix the air conditioner unit, or share a frustration.  For the children on this campus, “Mr. Gary” is amazing!  He is a friendly face, a quick smile, someone they look up to, a fixer and a life saver.  Lots of special surprises are in store, Shhhh!  We’ll tell you all about it next week.

Construction Update

The fire/security company has been chosen and will begin updating our alarm panels and smoke detectors in the Magnolia building ASAP.  As we continue to move forward with Trinity Century II plans, please keep this project in your prayers.

Scholastic Book Club

Please remember to place your Reading Club orders by November 22!  You can shop and submit your order online or return the printed order form with payment directly to me. No matter how you order, every purchase you make earns FREE Books and educational supplies for our classroom.  The arrival of the book box is always a highlight-thanks for making it happen!

Halloween Parade

Don’t forget to try and clear your schedule for our Annual Halloween Parade Around the Block.  We will be leaving campus at approximately 9:30 am; and with feet, strollers, and wagons, make our way around the block!  Any available hands will be appreciated.

CDC Survey

Friday will be with last day to participate in our recent survey.  Please help us out and share your thoughts by clicking on the link below.

http://school.trinitydowntown.com/parent-survey/

Accreditation

Trinity CDC is about to embark on re-accreditation with the National Lutheran School Accreditation.  We are required to have a group of parents sit on the committee that completes the self-study.  It will require several meetings over the next year, but not more often then once per month.  If you are interested in helping the CDC to develop a stronger program and would like to sit on this committee, please contact me ASAP,  407-925-8694.

Checklists and Assessments

Your child’s teachers should have sent home Developmental Checklists.  These are just a snapshot of what they are seeing in the classroom.  Do not be alarmed if you believe your child has a skill that did not get checked off.  It is the beginning of the year and children are in new classrooms, some children may still be warming up to their new environment.  If you know your child has mastered a specific skill, let the teacher know and she will adjust the checklist.  These developmental checklists will be completed 3 times this year, fall winter and spring.

The Ages and Stages Questionnaire will be completed twice this year for infants through Pre K 3.  During the next two weeks we will be completing the screenings with the infants and toddlers and then move on to the Preschoolers.  Because the state of Florida requires all children enrolled in VPK to be assessed 3 times per year, teachers will not be using the developmental checklists or the ASQ.  Children in VPK will only be assessed through the state assessment and a classroom “report card.”  Phone conferences will be set up for your convenience.   If at anytime you would like to schedule a conference with your child’s teacher please do not hesitate to ask.

Please know that these are not “tests”, children are not removed from the classroom.  All activities and skills, for infants through Pre K 3, are done within the classroom environment where the child should feel the most comfortable.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of the screenings, please do not hesitate to contact me.
