I’m Not SuperMOM!

It used to be a compliment: “I can bring home the bacon and cook it up in the pan.”  But today’s mother is pulled in ways that Superman would call kryptonite.  Not to put more pressure on the busy woman, but TIME IS RUNNING OUT for you to register for a renewal and rejuvenating weekend just for women.  On October 17-19, 2014, Strength for the Journey offers all women who feel the weight of a superhero cape pulling them down a weekend of release and unconditional acceptance.  Strength for the Journey is based on sharing Christian love and healing and will be held at the Canterbury Retreat Center in Oviedo. Cost is $199.00 for meals, snacks, lodging, and the program. There is money available to help with this cost, so please don’t let finance troubles keep you from this weekend of soul and mind relief.   For details and scholarship information, contact: Julia Malenke: jmalenke@trinitydowntown.org.

Growth Family Night

The first GFN at Trinity was a great success.  Our families made a delicious and healthy dinner together, the cooking lesson was provided by Trinity’s own chef Carmen Ramiz.  Megan Miessler talked to families about staying spiritually healthy, and Emma Moser Schulte, Director of Wellness for the Winter Park YMCA discussed how important it is for families to eat healthy and exercise together.  While the food cooked Alena, Membership Director for the Winter Park YMCA, taught a family Zumba class.  Parents and children danced together and then had a dance off.  The kids won...of course.  We hope more of you can join us for next month’s Growth event, Sunday, October  12th.  Watch for more details!

Middle School Youth Gathering

November 7-9, 2014 - Lake Yale Baptist Convention Center

This year all the churches in both Florida & Georgia will attend and Bill Yonker will be our speaker.  The Living Stones will be returning as our Gathering band. The registration fee remains at $140.

-  Who can register?

The Gathering specifically targets middle school youth. To register, a youth must be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade during the 2014-2015 school year. Non-LCMS youth are certainly welcome to attend also!

-  What is a Junior Guide?

A junior guide is a high school youth who shows leadership skills and would be a tremendous asset to any youth director taking his/her youth group. Two junior guides are allowed for each church. They will be given specific responsibilities and opportunities for leadership training.

-  Adult/Participant Ratio

For safety we require that each church provide 1 adult leader for every 6 attendees under the age of 18.

The event cost covers all program and administrative costs, two nights lodging, four meals, and a t-shirt for each participant. Keep your eye out for more information – coming soon!!

Please contact Lori Zavitz at 407-718-6184 or at lorizavitz@hotmail.com if you would like to attend.

TLS News

How do we define “Hard Work” at Trinity?   The meaning of this Big Rule might be a bit more elusive than the clearly evident aspects of Respect and Responsibility.   Hard Work is a catch-all phrase with a singular impact on how students act at school.  It might be understood as initiative, striving to do one’s best, persistence, overcoming, desire, efficacy (a “can-do” attitude), gumption, resilience, spunk, enterprise, resourcefulness, or grit.  It is the “hard-iness” of character, the inner drive to persist until one achieves satisfaction and success.

Again, examples abound on our campus this week:

  • Correcting your errors on a Math quiz, because now you finally understand how to do this kind of problem
  • Thinking about how you might contribute to the school, committing to be a representative on the Student Council
  • Finishing your chores at home before you get down to your homework (sometimes responsibility is just plain hard work)
  • Recognizing that you have harmed someone, and working through you own feelings to finally arrive at a truly sincere, honest, and introspective apology
  • Being willing to listen to someone’s hard-thought apology, even though that person has hurt and offended you deeply, maybe even more than once
  • (Even) Doing your push-ups in Physical Education the correct way with proper form
  • Reading independently for Accelerated Reader points
  • Displaying patience, kindness, goodness as fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5.22-23)

Hard Work at Trinity is truly a work in progress, in every classroom, a tough challenge beckoning the resolve of every student, every day.   Ask a TLS student about the Hard Work he or she is putting into our learning community!

Trinity CDC to Participate in the National Early Care and Education Collarboratives Project with Nemours and the Center for Disease Control.

As you may have read in previous Weekly Updates, the Trinity CDC is embarking on a National Early Learning and Education Learning Collaboratives (ECELC) Project.  It will help us look at the foods we serve and fitness activities we provide. Part of this project provides us with an exciting opportunity that will be taking place at our program. Researchers from the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition (GSCN) in Omaha, Nebraska will be visiting our program in order to conduct classroom observations using the Environmental and Policy Assessment and Observation (EPAO) instrument. GSCN is a public health research non-profit organization that is conducting the evaluation of the National Early Care and Education Learning Collaboratives Project, an initiative our program is participating in that is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and implemented by the Nemours Foundation. (If you want to learn more about the project visit: http://healthykidshealthyfuture.org/home/collaborate/ecelcproject/about.html.)  We are excited to participate in this national project and welcome the GSCN observers to our school.
