Construction Update, September 11, 2014

Hopefully you’ve clicked on the following link and are watching the construction on a daily basis. http://www.livestream.com/trinityconstruction. Work on the foundations continues, as well as the underground stormwater/drainage work and permitting process for the temporary portable classrooms to be located on the Amelia end of the soccer field in November. As for the gym roof, the leaks have been repaired and the interior should be dry until the full roof replacement can be coordinated between the two contractors, who would be working simultaneously on the site. Also, an architect looked at the gym roof structure last week and is preparing a report on the structure itself to make sure we will incorporate all of the necessary work to make the building leak-free for years to come. Doster Construction, the new building contractor, has offered the best timing for Tannenbaum Roofing to be on site is January when the existing portables will be removed so the roofer can have good access from the west side of the gym. We are hoping to postpone the major roof work until then, which also provides time to review the architect’s structural report. -Submitted by Kathy Aber, School Board and Task Force chair

Middle School Youth Gathering

November 7-9, 2014 - Lake Yale Baptist Convention Center

This year all the churches in both Florida & Georgia will attend and Bill Yonker will be our speaker.  The Living Stones will be returning as our Gathering band. The registration fee remains at $140.

-  Who can register?

The Gathering specifically targets middle school youth. To register, a youth must be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade during the 2014-2015 school year. Non-LCMS youth are certainly welcome to attend also!

-  What is a Junior Guide?

A junior guide is a high school youth who shows leadership skills and would be a tremendous asset to any youth director taking his/her youth group. Two junior guides are allowed for each church. They will be given specific responsibilities and opportunities for leadership training.

-  Adult/Participant Ratio

For safety we require that each church provide 1 adult leader for every 6 attendees under the age of 18.

The event cost covers all program and administrative costs, two nights lodging, four meals, and a t-shirt for each participant. Keep your eye out for more information – coming soon!!

Please contact Lori Zavitz at 407-718-6184 or at lorizavitz@hotmail.com if you would like to attend.

Three big rules I know by heart,

Each day this is how we start!

Think of others, that Respect,

I’m Responsible for myself.

Trinity Downtown is my school,

Working Hard is our third rule.

This little verse is a fundamental song students sing (to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star) during our Morning Assembly.  In previous emails I introduced you to our three big rules, and now you know the song!  During the next upcoming weekly emails, I will address each of these three foundations of our school community.  Trinity Downtown is grounded in a growing climate of Respect, Responsibility, and Hard Work.

What is Responsibility?  At Trinity every student is encouraged to be responsible about personal actions at school. Again, examples abound this week, and there is a rationale behind each of these:

  • introducing your grandparent to your teacher, because they had never met and you know both of these adults, you are responsible for the introduction
  • finishing your homework without being told by your parent, after all whose homework is it but your own?
  • when you don’t finish your homework, being honest with your teacher about why you failed yourself by not reinforcing what you already know from practicing on the assignment
  • carrying you own backpack out of the car in the morning, it is your backpack
  • picking up a piece of trash blowing down the hallway, even the paper isn’t yours the cleanliness of the campus is all of our responsibilities
  • when you cause harm to someone because you misbehaved and broke the rules (recall there really are just three big rules), you are responsible to figure out how you are going to fix the problem you caused, it is your class that has been affected

Learning to be responsible for yourself can sometime be a great challenge to overcome, and I have witnessed over and over again how teachers patiently strive to instill this characteristic in every child.  Responsibility at Trinity is truly a work in progress, every every classroom every day for every student.

This week a family interested in Kindergarten for next year asked what I felt was distinctive about Trinity.  While many schools emphasize, as we do, the importance of academics; I think Trinity “walks the second mile” (think of Matthew 5.41 from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount) in helping every student achieve a higher level of responsibility for personal actions; in other words, we go beyond what is expected in developing this fundamental and imperative trait.  This is the Trinity difference, and responsibility is the building block which undergirds our distinctiveness.

Ask a TLS student about his or her sense of responsibility, and you will understand how important this rule really is within our learning community!

Tour for the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County

Patty Moser, Trinity’s CDC Director, recently received a call from Karen Willis, CEO of the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County. Karen asked if she and a board member could come to tour the CDC portion of Trinity’s school on Monday, September 15 from 8-11 a.m.   What prompted this?  “She had heard that we were doing exciting things and wanted to get a glimpse of what we were offering to families in the downtown area.”   What a blessing that the message about our creative Christ-centered program is reaching the community!  This is a really big deal for Trinity ministry.  Hats off to our teachers and administrators, and to the families who are telling others about great things happening at TLS.  We give God the Glory for all these wonderful opportunities at Trinity Downtown.
