Sunday School Offerings--Operation Barefoot

We are collecting offerings to buy shoes and accepting donations of gently-worn, out-grown shoes.  Please bring them to Sunday School!  One of our Trinity staff members will take them to Honduras on her annual mission trip at Thanksgiving! Thank you.

Trinity Members, TOUCH A TRUCK is ready for your Supporting Role!

Support roles are available & necessary in all areas for all of our Trinity members, in pre-planning as well as volunteer support on the day of the event on November 15th!  We certainly need all hands on deck for this BIG fundraising event! Now is your opportunity to serve the Lord by helping out in any way that you are able.  If you are curious about how YOU can be a part of this fun day - email Jamie at ptl.tlcs@gmail.com to inquire!

Have Your Business Represented at TOUCH A TRUCK

Would your small business like to have a chance to advertise to thousands of people in the Orlando area on Saturday, November 15th? For $100, your Family Friendly Businesses can "own" a table from 9am-1pm on Saturday, November 15th during our huge Touch-A-Truck Event. You and your sale items will be placed in the shade in the loggia near all of the action! This is a great opportunity to showcase your products! Some of the vendors we are looking for include but are not limited to:  Mary Kay Cosmetics, Thirty-One monogrammed bag collections, Stella and Dot Jewelry, and Tupperware.  The fee of $100 will go directly to our children at TLS in care of our Parent Teacher League.  Due to limited space, there is only a certain number of tables available, so please don't delay! You may contact Traci Bradley at traci.bradley@kesslercollection.com.

Traffic on October 26th

When you come to church on Reformation Day, October 26th, there will be a detour if you drive up Rosalind Avenue.  You’ll have to turn right on Robinson, then left on Broadway and left on Livingston to get to the parking garage.  We’ve talked with the Festival Callé Orange promoters, and they tell us the detour will be clearly marked, so you shouldn’t have trouble getting here.  Please do leave home 5 minutes early that day, though!

Great Opportunity-No Experience Necessary

Trinity needs your help as an Usher.  Please consider volunteering yourself or a loved one to serve as an Usher.  High School and College students, we'd love to hear from you.  We have openings at all services (especially 6pm and 11am). Call or text Brent Killinger at 407-953-9599 or email bkkillinger@gmail.com

Pastor’s Discretionary Fund

Did you know that Trinity has a “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund” set up to enable the pastoral staff to help people in need at our discretion.  Over the years this Fund has enabled us to feed people, house people, get people through temporary emergencies—members or non-members, this fund has just plain helped people!  To learn how you can help, read Pastor Moore’s recent blog post  click here.

Inspiration and Hope

I know there are many requests for your charitable dollars.  Your regular tithe or gift to Trinity’s ministry is valued by every staff member on payday, every child when a classroom is cooler or warmer than the outside temperature, and every weekend worshipper when lights are on and the music is heard.  So this request for spending a little extra for LIFE is an appeal to your heart.  Redeeming Life Outreach Ministries first fund and awareness raising party will be yours to enjoy on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2014.  I (Deaconess Liz) have 18 tickets (but can provide more) available for $35 each.  This bargain price includes a full banquet dinner plus a ticket in a drawing for an escape weekend retreat in South Daytona. Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Sanford is graciously providing their fellowship hall for this exciting event. Redeeming Life Maternity home currently houses three women who have chosen LIFE for their child.  This special ministry is an LCMS Recognized Service Organization and one of Trinity’s benevolences.  Deaconess Liz serves on the Board of Directors.  Look for me after EVERY worship service THIS WEEKEND.  For more information contact me: eborth@trinitydowntown.org or 407-488-1919 X 127.

Basketball and Cheerleading Coaches Wanted!

Trinity Lutheran School is currently in need of basketball and cheerleading coaches for the upcoming season starting in November and continuing through February.  If you are qualified and feel that you could be a good fit for one of these positions, , please prayerfully consider the opportunity to be a role model for these children and be their coach.  All head coaches will receive payment for their services too!  If you would like more information or if you would like to apply for a position, please email the Athletic Director, Josh Brink, at JABrink@TrinityDowntown.com.  Thank you for your consideration and we look forward to seeing you on the court soon!

Pick up a Missionary Prayer Card

On your way up for communion, please pick up a missionary prayer card.

Box Tops Clipping Results

Trinity collected 3732 box tops so far this year!  Thanks to ALL your efforts, the school will receive $373.60.  Keep clipping!  Let’s see if we can beat this number during the month of October.  If you have any questions, please contact Stacy Walters @ slw2123@aol.com.

OWLS (Older Wiser Lutherans)

On Wednesday, October 29th at 11:30am we’ll meet for lunch at the Best Western/Mount Vernon Inn at 110 South Orlando Ave., Winter Park, Fl, 32789.  After lunch we’ll then go to Marge's (upscale Christmas shop) on Orange Blossom Trail off of Lee Road---this will get us ready for Christmas.  If you have any questions, please contact Bob Gordon at 407-897-1418.

Big Plans and Little Details

On Saturday, November 8, Supper and a Speaker is adjusting time and theme to Lunch and a Speaker.  The event starts at 8:30 a.m.with a light breakfast, Bible study, communion worship, and LWML business. But, if your schedule won’t allow a four hour escape, you are most welcome to come and share lunch and TWO (bonus!) speakers at 11:00am.  An $8.00 charge covers your meal and our guest speaker from House of Hope and Meals on Wheels.  But there is more, and this is the best part!  During the lunch you will enjoy a "Purse Auction."  Designer, and other new or gently used purses have been donated to raise funds for three mission projects.  The fun part is what is inside those purses: A SECRET SURPRISE.  You will bid on the purse and find a valuable gift inside!  We are pleased to welcome Karla Mathis, Executive Director of House of Hope a nationally recognized home for hurting teens founded by Sarah Trollinger right here in Orlando, who will share this ministry of love and restoration. AND BONUS!  Another speaker will talk about Meals on Wheels operation.  Holiday gift baskets from LCMS Orlando area churches have been prepared for presentation to Meals on Wheels.  For more information, contact MaryLou Evanchyk at 407-275-8096.

“Lord, teach us to pray”....for our children

Jesus’ disciples asked for help with prayer because they saw a difference between their ritual prayers and the relationship-building conversation Jesus had with God our Father.  Let’s turn our focus from “me” to “We” and pray for our school.  Each day set aside one minute to stop and prayer for safety, health, and peace for our children and teachers.  www.momsinprayer.org. Receive a short prayer every day for your child and school!!

Extended Trinity Family--Update on Tim Fink

Good news to report!  Tim completed his last chemotherapy session.  It was very special for us to receive via our mobile phone a picture of Tim ringing a bell at the Cancer Center signifying that he had completed the chemotherapy process that has consumed close to five months of his life. It has taken Tim longer to recover from this last session than from any of the others.  His body must be tired of all the commotion and intervention.  But recover he has and for that we give thanks to God.  A follow-up doctor’s visit shows no active cancer cells.  Consequently, Tim’s doctor has ordered the port to be removed and has placed radiation treatments on hold. And, Tim has received the OK to go back to active status with the Sheriff’s Department.

Is the battle over and the lymphoma defeated?  Who knows for sure but God? But how grateful we are for; the medical team that has cared for him, his wife and family who have supported him, those who over the months have visited and cheered him, and all of you who have sent to heaven your prayers for him.  Some of you have never met Tim but know him only through us.  Your friendship, love and prayers have sustained us in a journey we never dreamed would be ours.  We are richly blessed by not having to take that journey alone without you.  As the Lord gives you the opportunity, please reach out to others in the same way many have reached out to Tim and us, remembering that all of us are blessed eternally by God so that we can be a blessing to others. That’s what the Good News of Jesus, the Gospel, is all about.   God’s love and our love be with you all!     Millie & Ron Fink

Did You Go To FSU?

University Lutheran, the campus ministry at Florida State University, is seeking to develop an alumni network that is specifically focused on helping new graduates from FSU become acclimated to the new cities they find themselves in after graduation, inluding helping them find new home churches.  If you’re an FSU alumni at a Lutheran church, you are a “LutherNole” and we want to give you the opportunity to help other young “LutherNoles”.  To get involved or find out more, please send an email to matt@universitylutehranchurch.org.  Thanks.

Middle School Youth Gathering

November 7-9, 2014 - Lake Yale Baptist Convention Center

This year all the churches in both Florida & Georgia will attend and Bill Yonker will be our speaker.  The Living Stones will be returning as our Gathering band. The registration fee remains at $140.

-  Who can register?

The Gathering specifically targets middle school youth. To register, a youth must be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade during the 2014-2015 school year. Non-LCMS youth are certainly welcome to attend also!

-  What is a Junior Guide?

A junior guide is a high school youth who shows leadership skills and would be a tremendous asset to any youth director taking his/her youth group. Two junior guides are allowed for each church. They will be given specific responsibilities and opportunities for leadership training.

-  Adult/Participant Ratio

For safety we require that each church provide 1 adult leader for every 6 attendees under the age of 18.

The event cost covers all program and administrative costs, two nights lodging, four meals, and a t-shirt for each participant. Keep your eye out for more information – coming soon!!

Please contact Lori Zavitz at 407-718-6184 or at lorizavitz@hotmail.com if you would like to attend.

Cold and Flu Season: Limit the Spread of Germs

WebMD Feature, By Suz Redfearn, Reviewed By Brunilda Nazario, MD

Colds and flu are spread mostly by direct contact. When a sick person coughs or sneezes, virus droplets can travel up to 6 feet.

If you're in close quarters, ask the sick person to:

  • Cover their mouth and nose with a tissue and put the tissue in the trash right away.
  • Cough or sneeze into the crook of their elbow -- not their hand -- if they don't have a tissue. That means fewer germs get on their hands, which means they're less likely to spread their germs through touch.

Wash Your Hands Often

Washing your hands is the best way to keep from catching a cold. Other than getting a flu vaccine, it's the best way to prevent the flu, too.  Running your fingertips under water doesn't count. “The mechanics of the hand-washing make all the difference,” says Terri Remy, MD, medical director of Medical Associates at Beauregard in Alexandria, Va.  Sing the "Jesus Loves Me" song while you scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. The forceful rubbing is the most important part in getting rid of the germs. It should take about 20 seconds.  Other clean-hand tips:

  • Wash hands after handling any item the sick person may have touched, like a dish, cup, or towel.
  • Don't touch your face unless you’ve just washed your hands.

When Children Should Stay Home From School

  • Fever is the body's way of destroying the germs making it sick, and it's a common symptom of infections such as flu. Keep your children home if their temperature is 100° F or higher. Wait until children are fever-free before letting them return to school.
  • Diarrhea is often the result of infection, food poisoning, or a side effect to medications like antibiotics.Keep children home until stools are formed and your doctor gives the okay. Make sure your sick child stays well-hydrated.
  • Vomiting is another way for the body to rid itself of the germs making it sick, and is usually caused by a stomach virus or stomach infection. Keep children home if they've vomited twice or more in the last 24 hours. They can return to school after symptoms clear up or your doctor says they're no longer contagious.
  • Severe cough and cold symptoms should keep kids home from school. A serious cough could be a sign of contagious conditions like whooping cough, viral bronchitis, or croup. It can also be a sign of asthma or allergies.
  • Sore throats can be a symptom of strep or a common cold. If your child has been diagnosed with strep throat, keep your child at home for at least 24 hours after starting antibiotics. If your child has a mild cold, it's okay to go to school.
  • Pinkeye (conjunctivitis) is contagious, and children should stay home from school for the first 24 hours after treatment begins. Symptoms of pinkeye include eye redness, irritation, swelling, and pus.
  • Headaches can be a symptom of contagious conditions like viral gastroenteritis, flu, meningitis, and strep throat. Opinions differ on whether a child should be kept home. If your child doesn't have any other signs of illness, and feels okay, your child can go to school.

Sanitize Shared Items

If you can't avoid sharing doorknobs and other household items, clean before you touch them. If you want, use a cleaner with ingredients that can kill flu viruses, like bleach, hydrogen peroxide, antiseptics with iodine, and alcohol. But good old soap and water also work well.

Prevention!

To help keep the flu away, make sure you get the flu vaccine before the season starts. And it wouldn’t hurt to boost your usual wellness routine. "Be conscious about getting enough sleep, adequate nutrition, staying hydrated, getting exercise,” Hoven says. “Whatever [you] do to stay healthy, work a little harder at it.”
