A LONG Night to Celebrate

Since the end of daylight savings time change, the nights are longer.  For anyone who is experiencing loss of any kind or illness in any way, this extended time of darkness can be unbearable.  This will be the 7th year Trinity offers a “Service of the Longest Night”, a special Christmas worship service for those who find it hard to be in the company of so many others full of festivity.  Saturday night, December 20 at 6:00 p.m. we celebrate the longest night with a special word from Rev. Dr. Richard Armstrong of Lutheran Counseling Services in Winter Park.  Spread the word; invite someone you know; come and find the Light and hope.  Contact: Deaconess Liz: 407-488-1919 X 127 or eborth@trinitydowntown.org.

Preparing for Christmas

Last Christmas we said farewell to our faithful Sanctuary Christmas Trees after twelve seasons, and asked for donations to purchase new trees for this Christmas.  Many of you responded, and we raised $2,570.  Thank you!  That’s only $650 short of what we paid for two beautiful new trees that were delivered in September, so we’d like to invite you to contribute to finish paying for the trees plus another $350 to refresh our other Christmas garland/decorations.  If you’d like to help, just mark an offering envelope “Christmas Decorations” and put it in the plate or mail it to the church office.  Thanks, Pastor Moore.

Poinsettias

Yes, it’s that time of year again!  The flowers that make Trinity especially beautiful during the Christmas celebrations are provided by members of our Trinity family who wish to remember loved ones, or simply express special thanks to God. The names of contributors and people remembered will be published in the January Worship Notes following the holidays. (Suggested donations for poinsettias are $12.00 each) Order forms are available in the narthex.

Trinity Shares Christmas

The enthusiasm and love of the faithful and regular worship service attendees for our annual Christmas giving is incredible! Remember to return the requested item (unwrapped, please) with the ornament by November 30.  This is the 7th year Trinity has shared the Christmas Gospel with children and the 4th year we partner with Angel Tree Ministries to help incarcerated parents provide Christmas gifts to their children and food to the children’s caregivers.

Trinity Shares Christmas - part 2

This year we are assigned 20 children in our neighborhood and have an opportunity to reach beyond our city limits. Without additional assistance, the program will struggle.  Please step forward to make follow up phone calls to the caregiver to arrange delivery,  or drive and deliver gifts and groceries to one or two families..  The best volunteers are those who offered new ideas to help, so if that is you, or if you have any questions about Trinity Shares Christmas, please contact Glenda Frazier at whitemice@bellsouth.net.

The Big Red Bus, Sunday, December 7th from 8:30am-1pm.

Sign-up sheets for appointments are located in the Narthex.  You can also go online at www.oneblood.org, click on the Big Red Bus icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen, and then type in Trinity Lutheran Church.  It will list appointment times available and you can select one that fits into your schedule.  Please take time to give the gift of life!  Questions?  Contact Bruce Hahn at 407-299-3510 or bruce@mm-c.com.

Set Your Alarm for Noon (or any hour)

Time to pray for our school and the 300 children who fill the buildings 50 hours a week.  Why did  Jesus’ disciples ask for help with prayer? Because they saw a difference between their ritual prayers and the relationship-building conversation Jesus had with God our Father.  Let’s turn our focus from “me” to “We” and pray for our school.  Each day set aside one minute to stop and prayer for safety, health, and peace for our children and teachers.  www.momsinprayer.org. Receive a short prayer every day for your child and school!!

The Altar Guild is one more service opportunity for members of Trinity.  Traditionally, women “set the table, and prepare the meal,” husband and wife teams are most welcome.  Also, this is the perfect opportunity for mother/pre-teen or teen daughter to volunteer together for the church.  Once every 7th month you are asked to spend every weekend preparing and cleaning up the Lord’s Supper.  Questions or thoughts?  Contact Deaconess Liz or any Elder with your questions and offer to serve.  eborth@trinitydowntown.org or 407-488-1919 x 127.

Thankful Hearts in VPK and Kindergarten

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, students in VPK and Kindergarten gathered together on Friday, November 21, traveling back in time to the origins of Native American gratitude while surveying the history of the first settlers’ Thanksgiving. Mrs McKinnon, Mrs Kathryn, Mrs Liz, Ms Colby, Mrs Stacey,  Mrs Dalene, and their assistants coordinated meaningful lessons and activities for this special morning of learning.

Funny hats, yummy snacks, and active games thrilled our young gobblers! Children rotated between three classrooms and the front yard on a spectacularly sunny day. While outdoors, children linked arms and carried a turkey (beachball) between their hips and played turkey tag. Inside the Kindergarten classroom, children handcrafted turkey hats. Moving on to the VPK classrooms, the children listened to Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message, a beautifully illustrated Reading Rainbow® book which raises an awareness of the goodness of the earth and its abundance from the hand of our God. On to the snack room, children mixed a bag of healthy treats which also conveyed thankfulness in the following symbolic, yummy recipe.

Trinity Blessings Mix

  • Bugles trumpet the cornucopia, the horn of plenty.
  • Pretzels represent arms folded in thanks and prayers to God who so richly provides.
  • Five pieces of candy corn herald that first Pilgrim winter, when only five mere kernels of corn were eaten each day as food was so scarce.
  • Dried fruit manifests that Thanksgiving is a celebration of the harvest.

Perhaps you can use this recipe at home as a reminder of your Blessings throughout the year. Certainly this Thankful Hearts collaborative effort was a blessing to our VPK and Kindergarten children at Trinity.
