Thanks to the efforts of the women of Trinity, the Orlando Art Museum’s Festival of Trees has at leastONE tree that truly shines with the Spirit and truth of Christmas celebrations.  Linda ShortAndrea Gabriel, Maria Quesada, Chanda Gillenwater and Deaconess Liz worked joyfully one evening and completed 24 beautiful Chrismons for decorating a sparkling, glittery tree.  Diana Meyer and Mary Lou Evanchyk designed the perfect tree skirt that Martha Pfantz, Peggy TrappMary Fran Howard, and Nora VanDeest quilt-tied together.  photoWe see the beautiful Chrismon trees in our sanctuary every year and may take them for granted.  But the Trinity Tree in the OMA Festival is stunning.  The Chrismons were chosen to represent the star of hope, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, and the secret symbol of Christians- the Fish.  Andrea Gabriel recruited her friend to help design the additional glitter for the public to view beginning Saturday, November 16.  Kathy Wise and her daughter, Liz, joined the decorating team to put the whole thing together.  For the third year, Marilyn Blackwood lends the use of her Willow Tree Nativity to elegantly emphasize Jesus as the true gift of Christmas.  Like our faith in one Savior, the simplicity of the Tree makes it stand out among hundreds of decorated icons of Christmas.

IMG_3041But, no story of success is complete unless there is some quirky or funny tale to go with it, and this community witness project has one.  To begin the tale of mishaps and oversights, I called the Chrismon maker, talked about deadline dates and prices, discussed the availability of the designs we had chosen, and then completely forgot to actually place the order!  After two weeks of waiting for a shipment, I placed a panicked call to Mr. Robert Mallett in KalamazooMichigan.  He was most gracious and understanding.  The order arrived in 4 days, whew!  Late last week, Andrea and I picked a convenient time to decorate the tree at the museum.  Thursday was best for her and since she is the designer and had most of the items, we agreed to meet at 1:30 p.m.  On Wednesday – 24 hours before our intended decorating time – I received a nervous phone call from the chairman of the Festival:  “Where are the Trinity women?  The decorating deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday and yours is the only tree without shimmer and shine.”   Oh no!  Several fervent phone calls and a forgiving Museum Council of 101 allowed us to sneak in early Thursday morning and put it all together.  Thanks to Candace Reid for her Christmas grace.

Trinity Lutheran School Families (CDC & K-8)

All School Thanksgiving Lunch – Tues. November 26th

Each year, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break, our Food Service Manager, Rich Poole, serves an authentic Thanksgiving feast for lunch. To ensure we prepare enough food we are requiring an RSVP if you are planning on eating lunch that day with your child.  Please indicate on the RSVP slip sent home today (and can also be found in the school office).  This RSVP form is for adults only – CDC students need to sign up on the list in their classrooms (All K-8 students already pre-paid for this meal in their registration fee). Please send the bottom half of the slip along with your $5.00 payment to the school office by Wednesday, November 20th.

We are in need of some volunteers to cut pies into pieces and plate them in the morning and help dish out the food during the lunch.  If you are able to help out please contact Cathy Fuller in the front office – cfuller@trinitydowntown.org –a great way to earn some P.R.I.C.E. hours!

The Children’s Christmas Program at “The Gift”

On December 6, 2013, Trinity Downtown will present The Gift, a Christmas program that Trinity has hosted for years on the downtown stage at Lake Eola. Two years ago, Mayor Buddy Dyer joined Trinity by adding the official Light Up Orlando event where he turns on the lights to the city's official Christmas tree. This year, the event will include the TLS musical, a mass downtown choir singing The Candlelight Processional (performed annually at a nearby rodent's theme park), multiple food trucks, a Christmas shopping village, and a Christmas movie.

We Three Spies is the musical that Trinity Lutheran School will perform for The Gift. Behind the witty one liners and catchy songs found in this captivating story about three young spies on a mission is the message that Christ was sent to earth to save us. It will surely have you on the edge of your seat, laughing and crying along with the characters!

8th Grade Tsunami Lutheran World Relief Cake Pop Project

The 8th Grade students at TLS will be making brownie cake pops this coming Thursday, November 21, to be delivered on Friday, November 22 at the end of the school day.  The pops will be individually wrapped and a donation of $1 per pop is suggested.  All proceeds will be sent to LWR for aide to those devastated by the recent tsunami in the Philippines.  If congregation members are interested in ordering cake pops, please contact Julia Malenke at jmalenke@trinitydowntown.org by next Wednesday.  Thank you for your support!

Please Support TLS Middle School Get to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia!

Thank you all for your wonderful support helping our middle school students get to Washington DC last year! We could not have done it without your help and financial support. This year the middle school students will be attending an outdoor education program at Driftwood Education Center in Georgia. The students’ families are paying for their student’s trip fees this year, but we need your help to raise enough money for a charter bus. Our fundraising goal is $6000! Below are two ways that you can support our middle school students this year.

1. Brax Spirit Cups (November 11th-25th):  The middle school students are selling cups for most professional and college sports teams. There are many different styles available and the cups come in sets of four. If you are looking for a great Christmas present for your sports fanatic friends and relatives, these are great! Please stop by the office or see a middle school student for yours today! If each student sells 26, we will make $5000!

2. Car Washes at Trinity: Please come out to support the middle school students and get your car washed! The middle schools students and parents will be washing cars from 8:00-12:30 on specific dates for your donation. This is a drive through car wash, so you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your Air Conditioning! Please come through car line for your car wash this weekend, November 17th and again on December 15th and January 26th. Thank you so much for your support!

Tutoring Opportunity

Mrs. Wilkins, our 4th and 5th grade teacher, has some openings in her after school tutoring schedule.  She has openings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays after school for students up to the 6th grade level.  If you are interested please contact her at dwilkins@trinitydowntown.org.

November Chapel Offerings

Our November offering is for canned goods that will go to the Prince of Peace food pantry.  Any cash donations will be sent to the Christian Service Center in downtown Orlando.  The students in K-8 will be having  their yearly competition amongst the different grade levels for the most cans brought in.  What a great way to have fun while helping others at the same time.  During the upcoming holiday season many families need some extra help and both of these organizations are there for them.  But in order for these organization to reach all of the families that need them,  we need your help!  Any non-perishable food items are welcomed.   Thank you!

TLS Extra Curricular Activities

Beginning in January, all extra curricular activities (Soccer, Shots, Computer Tutor, Impact Dance, Drum Class and the Watch Me Sculpt class) will handle all of their own registration and payments. Parents will no longer pay through VANCO. Some vendors may still have registration forms that can be filled out and turned in to the office and some may do it all online. Please be sure to read the registration forms carefully. If you have any questions, please email Keri Packman at kpackman@trinitydowntown.com.

Call Process Update

Thanks to the 69 people who filled out the self-study survey!  The Campus Family and Youth Pastor Call Committee will meet this Sunday evening to pull the results together and complete the self-study, and will then send all the nominations with the study to our District President so he can assist us in moving forward with the call process.  We will also publish the study and the list to you all, please watch for it.  Thanks!!

Trinity Traditions!

  • Thanksgiving Bread  Each year Trinity members volunteer their time to bake a kitchen full of mini bread loaves to be placed on the altar, blessed and given away.  Trinity families receive a loaf during the Thanksgiving Eve and Thanksgiving Day worship services, and many other loaves are taken to a local shelter to share with others.  We need volunteers to bake and bag the loaves on Wednesday, 11/27, and a volunteer who attends Thanksgiving Day worship on 11/28 to take the remaining loaves to a local shelter.  Please contact Chanda if you can fill either of these volunteer roles.  TLC@TrinityDowntown.org or 407-488-1919 x101.

  • Combined Worship and Congregational Thanksgiving Meal  Join us for one Combined Service at 10am in the Sanctuary on November 24th.  Following the service, we will gather in the gym for our annual Thanksgiving meal.  Chef Rich will prepare Turkey, Ham, Mashed potatoes, Peas, Gravy, stuffing and desserts.  Congregation members are asked to bring a side dish to share:  if your last names starts with A - L bring a cold side, and if your last name starts with M - Z bring a hot side.  As always, please invite a friend or neighbor to join us in this service of Thanksgiving and time of fellowship!

  • Poinsettias for Christmas!  Yes, it’s that time of year again!  The flowers that make Trinity especially beautiful during the Christmas celebrations are provided by members of our Trinity family who wish to remember loved ones, or simply express special thanks to God. The names of contributors and people remembered will be published in the January Worship Notes following the holidays. (Suggested donations for poinsettias are $12.00 each) Order forms are available in the narthex.

All Trinity members and friends are invited to stop by our Thrivent table in the loggia, on Nov. 16-17, after all services.   You're invited to sign up for our door prize - a beautiful fresh flower arrangement by Rennie Shultz, and a special surprise door prize for Trinity kids!   You'll also want to enjoy some cider and doughnut holes.   And you can meet your Trinity Thrivent Advocates!   Thrivent members will want to vote for their new 2014 Orange County Thrivent Board.  (In 2014 Trinity will be represented by Diann Grover.)   Also, learn what Thrivent has done for Trinity this past year.  (Trinity's next Thrivent supported projects are Touch-a-Truck and The Gift (for Idignity).   Thank you for supporting Thrivent.

Did you know about the Busy Bags?

Many churches offer “busy bags” to help parents with small children fight boredom and sit as quietly as possible during the worship service.  Trinity LWML women provide the busy bags and the material that is inside the bags. The bags are in need of caretakers.  Due to many circumstances, our faithful women volunteers who used to take charge of cleaning out, re-stocking, and even disinifecting the busy bags are no longer available.  Are you?  Deaconess Liz is looking for at least 2 women, preferably the moms whose children use the bags, to keep up with their care.  Contact: eborth@trinitydowntown.org or 407-488-1919 X 127.

Accreditation

The TLS CDC is about to embark on re-accreditation with the National Lutheran School Accreditation.  We are required to have a group of parents sit on the committee that completes the self-study.  It will require monthly meetings over the next year and half.  If you are interested in helping the CDC to develop a stronger program and would like to sit on this committee, please contact Patty Moser, CDC Director, ASAP,  407-925-8694. I will be calling parents to ask for their help next week.
