 A Few Notes from Pastor Tom Zehnder

Brothers and Sisters! Jackie and I are pleased to be walking with you in these days

Have you heard this quip? A harried man is running down the street, shouting as he goes: “There were five of them. They were dressed in red and white, three men and two women. They are carrying binders and documents of the greatest importance. I must find them! I am their leader!” That is not atypical for me to experience this angst several times a day at Trinity. This is not a bad thing, but is does indicate the busyness and work that goes on here day to day. Hats off to our staff, teachers, administrators, helpers, employees who work so faithfully to keep Trinity humming.

The Holy Season of Lent

And speaking of “walking together…” We have entered the holy Season of Lent with Jesus and with each other. We say there are forty days in Lent. Counting from Ash Wednesday to Easter there are 46 days! But we don’t count Sundays as Lent! We call them Sundays in Lent, for each Sunday is a celebration of the Resurrection. But all distinctions aside, this is a really good time to step back from the frenzy of our lives and spend time in devotion with Jesus as He walks unflinchingly to the Cross at Golgotha! He makes that holy Trek for us and beckons us to walk with Him..

On Wednesdays of Lent, we will meet at 12:10PM and 7:00PM for Lenten devotionals. The overall theme is: “The Cruciform Life,” the point being that we are “shaped” by Christ’s Cross and our lives may reveal that! Each week we will take a stab at understanding ourselves as “formed by the cross” for a life of sacrifice, joy, forgiveness, and so forth. I am sure we will gain by these brief devotional exercises. We will be “in and out” in forty minutes or less.  Bring  the kids - PLEASE. Join as a family in Christ.

I am eagerly awaiting our Maundy Thursday Communion Celebration Service and the Good Friday solemn and moving gathering. You won’t want to miss these services as they lead us directly into the incredible joy and gladness of Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus the Christ!

The Rite of Confirmation

Sunday, April 26, 2015, at the 11:00 AM Service our 8th grade Confirmands will receive the beautiful Rite of Confirmation. This is a Rite of Passage for our Lutheran young people, a step closer to an adult life of participation in and support of the congregation into which they are “confirmed.” Please keep them in your prayers:  Alex Erpenbach, Laura Fischer, Reagan Jeffery, Thomas Kauffman, Harrison Koller, David Mooney, Zack O'Rourke, Maddie Rawlings, Tyler Tellock, Spenser Tesch

Parents and Children, Worship as a Family

If you are a parent, please support these beautiful young people in their attempt to grow in their Faith and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. For these confirmation students and children of all ages participating in 9:30 Sunday School /Bible Study/Confirmation instruction hour, please help them to be faithful in their learning and participation in the Church. While they are in their instruction classes at 9:30 AM on Sunday morning, please attend our Bible classes for the adults which meet at the same time, and then TOGETHER AS A FAMILY join in the worship of the congregation. Instruction in the Faith and worshipping as members of the Faith family are not the same. One is supported by the other.  Thanks. trz

The Comfort of a Quilt

With these recent colder nights, even we sunny Florida residents welcome the warm comfort a handmade quilt delivers.  Trinity has a small, but vibrant group of women who meet twice a month to assemble quilts for Lutheran World Relief.  The ultimate purpose of the quilt is to provide warmth, but it also supplies a solution for many other needs:

  • a baby carrier, tied around a mother’s back;
  • a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables;
  • a sack for transporting those goods to market;
  • a sunshade;
  • a shawl; and most importantly
  • a constant reminder that someone, far away, cares a lot.

Last week, Mary Fran Howard, Peggy Schroeder, Martha Pfantz, Peggy Trapp, Nora VanDeest, Mary Lou Evanchyk, Diana Meyer, Gladys Dittmer, and Deaconess Liz sent 74 hand-tied quilts to the LWR distribution center in Baltimore, Maryland.  The process of packing, counting, weighing, and transporting the 16 boxes was  eased with the aid of Mary Fran’s husband Jerry.  Actually, 76 quilts were assembled this past year.  Two were donated to the Trinity Lutheran School’s annual Silent Auction fundraiser.

Lutheran World Relief helps us “follow” our quilts as they are distributed all over the world.  In 2014, Trinity’s gifts made a difference to individuals and families in Peru, and Tanzania.  Lutheran World Relief distributes quilts, food, school supplies, and personal care items throughout the world – including  the United States.   Our Trinity group gathers every 1st and 3rd Thursday mornings, to tie together colorful tops, warm lining, and solid pieces of material. The result is tangible, loving our neighbors with God’s love.  In October, a beautiful display of the product of these bi-monthly gatherings will highlight Lutheran Women in Mission awareness month.

Stewardship Drive

Mark your calendars! Consecration Sunday is May 31, 2015. This Stewardship journey will begin formally on Saturday/Sunday, May 9/10, 2015. This fine and tested process is truly a Gospel-based approach to the grace of giving! You will enjoy it and our congregation will flourish by it!  Bob Meyer will be leading the process with help from a “cast of thousands.”

We are a congregation with a tremendous financial challenge! Our budgeted church offering amounts have not been matched by reality of actual offerings, and we are running, running, running behind. We can change this very quickly. From time to time I will be addressing this pressing need. In the meantime, let’s do what we can to change this somewhat daunting situation!  Thanks brothers and sisters!    - trz

Silent Auction

Save the date for this year’s Silent Auction Event- “Masquerade Madness” on Saturday, April 25th, 2015.  If you would like to make a donation to the auction please contact the front office for a donation form. There is a lot of help needed to make this event a success.  It is a great opportunity to earn P.R.I.C.E. hours.  Please contact the front office for more details.

Cautious Driving Please

Access to Amelia Avenue is gone and our in and out to Trinity campus is through the Magnolia Building parking lot. The driveway of the Magnolia building is a TWO WAY drive. No parking will be permitted along the Magnolia driveway any time of day or evening.  PLEASE be cautious when entering and exiting.  Morning and afternoon carline began exiting out the Magnolia driveway on February 3rd.  Drive slowly  - 5 MPH is almost too fast - and please pay careful attention.  When you visit the Church or Finance offices, please park in the back of the building along the left side property fence line, labelled employee parking.  You are not permitted to use  “Tenant Parking” or “Parent Drop off” spaces between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Thank you!

Always Time for Prayer

Work diligently to build prayer walls of protection, love, unity, and joy around our school and homes.  Use a Bible verse like: “Jesus, take these little children into your arms and bless them.” or simply focus on your child, your child’s class and teachers and say, “Lord show your mercy and love.”  Any simple prayer can be lifted to our heavenly Father and easily repeated daily. If you would like to receive a short prayer every day for your child and school, simply visit  www.momsinprayer.org

VBS Countdown Begins!

In 21 weeks, Trinity will co-sponsor the annual Vacation Bible School week.  The new building construction has opened our eyes to discover a wonderful opportunity to take VBS on the road!  Broadway Methodist Church is willing to share their facilities with us and together we will share God’s love to our neighborhood children. AND, our Summer Camp can take a short walk and be part of the Jerusalem Marketplace experience.  Mark your calendars for July 20-24, 2015.    As always, the talents and time of our Trinity church family is the foundation for success with this summer mission outreach.  Please prayerfully consider helping with registration, collecting needed supplies, showing off your baking, woodworking, sewing/weaving, or other crafting skills, decorating, and guiding children.  Contact Deaconess Liz with questions and offers for assistance with planning and executing this exciting short-term mission opportunity.  407-488-1919 X 127 or eborth@trinitydowntown.org.
