CALLING THE CHURCH TO PRAYER

During this Lenten season, please include in your prayers:  1) The Senior Pastor and K-8 Executive Director Call Processes; 2) Prayers for our Church Family Members who are “Missing in Action;”  3) Prayers for People in Need of the Lord;  4) For Someone to Volunteer to Launch our Email Prayer Chain; 5) Prayers for the Financial Health of Trinity Lutheran Church and School.

LENTEN WORSHIP   12:10 and 7 PM  Every Wednesday through March 16

Learning to Overcome the Evil One (as Jesus did in His ministry on earth) will be the focus of our Lenten series.  Lots of practical application of the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our everyday lives.  SUNDAY WORSHIP will help us apply the Gospel to everyday topics like ANGER, FEAR, TOUGH TIMES, and MENTAL ILLNESS. Let’s use this season as a time of SPIRITUAL GROWTH.

TRINITY VOTERS ASSEMBLY   SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 12:30 PM

A message from our President, Ted Lange:  Mark your calendars and make the commitment for next weekend, February 21st for the first Voters Assembly meeting of the new year.  We will gather in the Sanctuary following the 11AM service and begin the proceedings at 12:30.  Agenda items will include reports on Trinity’s Ministries, State of the Parish, Financial Health of the Parish, School Board and Leadership Highlights.  This is an opportune time to come together as a congregation to assess where we are and to begin charting our future.  We do have obstacles to overcome, including financial challenges due to contributions falling behind.  However, by the Grace of God we will not only meet our obligations but grow to be a thriving presence in downtown Orlando.  Please plan on joining us on February 21st.

NEW CENTURY CENTER DEDICATION   SUNDAY, MARCH 13!!!

Guest Preacher Rev. Gerald Kieschnick will be with us for all weekend worship services. FL/GA District President Greg Walton will join us for the actual Dedication Event which begins immediately after the 11am service in the early afternoon..  Mark your calendar and watch the mail for your invitation and more details!

CAMPUS REVITALIZATION GIFT OPPORTUNITIES

Our General Manager Eric Havens is tracking the most urgent sanctuary renovations and campus painting projects. As of this writing, about $12,000 has been pledged. We’re currently getting estimates on repairing/sealing the sanctuary windows. We certainly won’t get everything done by Dedication/Easter, but let’s keep trying to give our place of worship the care it deserves!  THANK-YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!  Please check with Eric for more details at eric.havens@trinitydowntown.com

“B.L.E.S.S.” WORKSHOP   Sunday, March 6  12:15 – 2:30 PM

How can you be a BLESSing to people around you who need the Lord?  It’s a five-step process: BOND with them; LEARN about them; ENGAGE them; SERVE them; SHARE your faith with them. We all do it, but we can be much more INTENTIONAL about it. Let’s gather over lunch and encourage each other to be a BLESSING.  FL/GA District Mission Executive Rev. Doug Kallesen will be our presenter for this unique event sponsored by our Outreach Team.  Watch for Sign-up at Church and online or contact us at TLC@TrinityDowntown.com.

GOOD NEWS ABOUT HOME BIBLE STUDY GROUPS

Our Elders are working with our Home Bible Studies and have identified two new possibilities.  We’ll be asking all of you very soon about whether you’d like to learn more about participating in a Home Bible Study Group.

Memorial Service for Florence Fritz

Trinity Family,  Florence Anna Fritz joined her Lord and Savior, Jesus on February 9, 2016 at Winter Park Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held at Trinity on Friday, February 19, at 2:00 pm with a reception immediately following in the Fellowship Hall. (Please share this information with those who may not see this online update. Thank You.)

Florence was born July 18, 1911 in Reading, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Reading and met her future husband, Irwin (they were classmates in High school). He moved to Florida ahead of her to find work in Orlando. Shortly after, he invited her to come down and marry him. They were married at Trinity in September, 1935.  Her son David was born in Orlando in 1941 and her daughter Susan was born in Reading in 1944. They moved back to Reading to be near their families during the war years.

Florence became active at Trinity early on by taking the responsibility of maintaining the “Cradle Roll” program which sent out postcards to all newborn children at Trinity and continued with follow-up through age 2 years with baptismal reminders and spiritual encouragement to the families. Years later Florence became involved in the LWML and served in the local chapter. She was elected Treasurer of the FL-GA district LWML. She drove women to local and state rallies for those who couldn’t drive.

When Milan Weerts was Pastor of Trinity, he invited her to participate in the Evangelism Explosion ministry. She hesitantly agreed because she was somewhat shy and not used to talking to strangers about her faith and sharing the Gospel. After 16 weeks of training it became a little less frightful. Florence and Irwin were avid bird watchers, involved in the FL Audubon society, and led National bird watching tours to islands in the Caribbean. She enjoyed playing bridge with her card club group once a month and working outside in the yard around the house. She tended the orchid plants after her husband died in 1977 taking them inside the house and garage when the cold weather came.

Florence is survived by her daughter Susan Padgett, her son David I., grandchildren Todd and Tony Keener, David Paul and John Michael, and 5 great-grandchildren. Florence will be interred at Laureldale Cemetery, Reading, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Coming up THIS WEEK  –  Handbell Workshop!

If you’re one of those people who want to see what it’s like to ring handbells, please come to our two-session Handbell Workshop, which will be held in the church balcony from 6:00 – 6:40pm on Wednesday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 24.  Ms. Jennifer Castillo, who has years of handbell experience, will lead the sessions and demonstrate the dos and don’ts of ringing.  This will be “hands-on” – you’ll be ringing like a pro at the end!  Everyone, from teenagers on up, is welcome.  The workshop is for musical enjoyment and enrichment, not a commitment to join the handbell choir. Please contact Glenda Frazier at whitemice@bellsouth.net no later than February 14 to reserve your spot.

Volunteers Needed!

On Thursday, March 10, Trinity has the awesome opportunity to host the Touring Choir from Concordia College, New York. This concert will be filled with awesome music! But, in order to make this work, we need help from you!

  1. The choir members are in need of host families for after their concert. They travel in groups of 2, with there being a need for 2 groups of 3 (1 guys, 1 ladies). If you are willing to host, please contact me at justin.tayon@trinitydowntown.com. Let me know how many you would be willing to house for the night (minimum of 2 is required since they travel in pairs).
  2. There is also help needed with the dinner before the concert. If you are wanting to help/assist with that, please contact Glenda Frazier at whitemice@bellsouth.net.

Thank you for your willingness to serve.  -Justin Tayon

How can you help people in need RIGHT NOW?

Rather than say, “someone should do something for those people,” you can join Trinity and be one of the 100 volunteers at the  IDignity event on Thursday, February 18 and help over 200 people obtain Florida identification.   The Federal REAL ID Act requires every citizen prove their identity with a birth certificate, social security card, and proof of residence. Eight years ago, Trinity members followed Jesus’ direction and cared for strangers in need and along with other Christian men and women organized IDignity, Inc. IDignity, a non-profit faith based organization, makes a complicated process easy every month with a free identification event.    If you cannot give up one day a year, you can share a financial gift. Pre-registration will allow you to serve where you want when you want: www.idignity.org/volunteer.  Event is held at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission on Central Blvd. with FREE parking 1 block east.  The Continental breakfast is free and lunch is free, but your time is priceless.  You can talk to Deaconess Liz (407-488-1919 X 127) with any questions.
