A Message from Pastor Tom Zehnder

Trinity Family!

Have you ever heard of “Low Sunday?” It is the Sunday after Easter. While it is not listed in the official  Church Year Calendar, it is universal. We observed it last Sunday, April 12. It is significant for an almost record low attendance and all that goes with it. Seems that a lot of folks just skip church after the Easter Feast!  Wonder why?

I hope you will all gather this Sunday. We will be thinking together about “A Glimpse of Resurrection Beauty.”  Based on the events and words of the Scripture readings we will go on an incredible journey of Resurrection Joy! Hope you will be there! “Away with you, Low Sunday! Away with you!”  (:

Less than two weeks ago, on April 8, the newly established Ministry Teams gathered for the first time. I realize we have talked about this before, but I cannot help but say once more: It was an incredibly powerful gathering. The laity of this beautiful Trinity parish came together with a determination to join hands and hearts and move forward into the future God gives us as His church!  Let us give thanks to God for this good start and pray fervently that the Spirit of God will continue to breathe into us strength and energy for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!  The Teams will assemble again on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 7 PM for discussion and ministry planning.

If you have not done so, please join in and participate with any of the Teams: Evangelism, Stewardship, Fellowship, Youth, Media, Properties/Facilities, Membership Matters. Call the office, speak to a Pastor, Deaconess, or any member of the Leadership Council for information.

On Wednesday, April 22, 2015, the Confirmands, their parents and loved ones, their prayer partners, the congregation… we will all join in the Sanctuary for a Faith-Sharing opportunity with our Confirmands: David Mooney, Spenser Tesch, Tyler Tellock, Thomas Kauffman, Alexander Erpenbach, Reagan Jeffery, Zack O’Rourke, Laura Fischer, Harrison Koller, Madeline Rawlings.  Under the direction of their Teacher, Tim Norris, and assisted by Pastor Zehnder, the Confirmands will speak of the things they have “seen and heard” as they have studied the Word of God and the Catechism of Dr. Martin Luther. This faith sharing is a beautiful milestone for the Confirmands and an encouragement for all of us here at Trinity. Please come! Let’s fill the Sanctuary!

Sunday’s  Voters’ Assembly is an extremely important gathering for Trinity congregation. It will begin after the 11 AM Service (about 12:30pm). There are by-law changes to address, and of course the election of our officers for the coming terms.  And! Information regarding future pastoral ministry paths will be shared. You won’t want to miss this!

Ascension Day Worship – 7pm, Thursday May 14, 2015

The Ascension of Our Lord will be commemorated on May 14, 2015, forty days after Easter Day. We will celebrate this magnificent event in the life of our Risen Lord in a service of worship at 7pm on the 14th.   At this service we will also take time to remember with love and thanksgiving the ministry and life of The Rev. Dr. Ronald Fink who served Trinity faithfully as Senior Pastor from 1989 to 1999.  Pastor and Millie Fink were tireless servants of Jesus during their 10 years in Orlando.  Even though they no longer lived in Florida, they kept a home in our hearts.  To honor his lifetime of service to the Lord and specifically his 10 years at Trinity, a stained glass window depicting the Ascension of our Lord will be installed in our sanctuary.  If you would like to honor Pastor Fink's memory with a monetary gift, you can make a donation to Trinity Lutheran Church indicating on your check “Pastor Ronald Fink Memorial Fund.”

Gospel Sharing without Speaking

You cannot use Moses’ excuse” and claim you lack eloquent speech to share the Gospel Good News. Your quiet pen mark or direct cash contribution of $15.00 will provide a family with a Beginner’s Bible. Every 4 year old child graduating from Trinity Lutheran School’s Pre-Kindergarten program is presented this Good News book, but this gift from our church congregation members is only made possible through generous donations.  We are presenting  the Bible to 48 children (and families) the first week of June.  Please consider sponsoring one or more Bible gifts this spring. Sponsorship tickets are posted in the narthex.  Your check is made payable to “Trinity Lutheran Church and School” withChildren’s Bibles” in the memo line.

Easter Lilies

Thank you to all who purchased Easter lilies for the Sanctuary. If you haven’t already, you are welcome to take your plants home, they are now in the loggia adjacent to the Sanctuary.  Those left behind after this weekend will be shared with anyone who would like to take one home and plant it!

Request from FL/GA District President Walton

President Walton has invited us to participate in a Convention Ingathering.  We’re asking Trinity families to collect for specific needs of Redeeming Life Maternity Home in Sanford, FL, which cares for unwed mothers who need a place to stay during their pregnancy.  This is a Recognized Service Organizations (RSO’s) of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, which is doing wonderful work on behalf of all of us to engage in the Master’s Business.  You can participate by providing onesies for newborns to twelve months, and diapers sizes 1, 2, or 3 which will then be brought to the Convention in June.  These aren’t expensive items, but can make a huge difference in how this organization engages in the Master’s business. Please join us as we seek to bless these ministries as they share the love of Jesus in very tangible ways.

We would also invite you to give a special offering, to be brought by Convention delegates to Sunday morning’s Convention worship, that will be divided for Redeeming Life and Stepping Stones Ministries, which is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and serves the homeless population.  (Please mark your envelope Special:  Redeeming Life) Your help and caring can make a world of difference in connecting people to Jesus. The Apostle John reminds us, “We love because He first loved us!” How we rejoice in that love. May our gifts be an expression of His great love for us that empowers our love for others. Thank you in advance for your partnership in this endeavor.

With you in the Master’s business, Rev. Gregory S. Walton, President

The Florida-Georgia District, LCMS

The deadline for donated items is April 20, 2015.

Let us Confess...

This is our last Sunday to hear the confession of faith as presented by Trinity’s 2015 confirmation class. The essays we have heard since the last weekend in March have brought tears to the eyes of many staunch members. The simple expressions of faith in the True God and His marvelous power and gift of love for all people evokes humility and moves us to emotional gratitude.  This weekend, Laura Fischer, Harrison Koller, and Maddie Rawlings share their personal description of the faith that is rooted in their heart.

What is going on over there?

If you are passing by the corner of Livingston and Rosalind/Magnolia early on a Wednesday mornings, you will see people standing around a table across from Trinity’s school entrance.  What are those people doing?  Five members of Trinity arrive at 7:00 a.m. and volunteer 2 hours each week giving away coffee.  No gimmicks, not a publicity stunt, and it’s not a clever marketing plan; simply a free cup of coffee.  Trinity church has sponsored this Free Coffee Ministry for 10 years. Beginning with a table sitting on the church steps and inviting motorists to stop for car hop service, the free gift has expanded outreach to the corner of Livingston and Magnolia/Rosalind via a retrofitted golf cart. Sadly, the  golf cart can no longer transport the java pots.  Please help Trinity continue and expand this ministry of compassion and good will to people in downtown Orlando. Contact J.J. Alexander: 407-538-1011 or the church office: 407-488-1919 X101 with your donation and volunteer support.

TLS Parent Teacher League

“Go Team!”  Thanks to everyone who came out for the Cheap Shots Basketball game Tuesday evening.  What a fantastic event!  We hope to add it to our regular list of fundraising events each year.  Our Trinity team was made up of TLS parents, staff & student family members, our TLS BBall coaches and refs, and even a 106.7 fan.  They were AMAZING!  The Idem dancers and Trinity cheerleaders put on a really impressive half game show with a special cheer presentation for Rachel Rodriquez, our TLS staff member who is preparing for major surgery. Many thanks to Johnny’s House and the XL 106.7 Cheap Shots Basketball Team for coming out to Trinity to help us raise funds for the school.  The Score was 85 to 59 with the win going to Cheap Shots BUT TLS won with a cheering crowd and a successful fundraiser!

To Market To Market To Buy…..

Not a fat pig, but the sounds and smells of old Jerusalem.  Trinity is co-sponsoring a summer Bible School unlike any other. The “marketplace” is filled with booths  of bakery items, clay pots, woodworking, easy sewing or weaving, jewelry making, and musical instruments. The sounds are stories of the man, the teacher, the Christ -- Jesus!

On July 20-24, Trinity and Broadway Methodist Church present Jerusalem Marketplace. Right NOW, we request donations of articles that will decorate the booths.  Right NOW, we request your assistance with items children can purchase in those booths.  This is an opportunity to participate without taking time off work or finding a babysitter. Every member of Trinity congregation is responsible for the success of our summer outreach ministry.  Donate prayer shawls, knitted scarves or water bottle holders, dried flowers, herbs and spices, pots or dishes for displaying items, jewelry to sell, homemade soap and candy, very simple woodworking tools (for display), blocks of wood, simple whistles and flutes, and any other items to bring the old Jerusalem marketplace to life.  Contact Deaconess Liz with questions and offers for assistance with planning and executing this exciting short-term mission opportunity.  407-488-1919 X 127 or eborth@trinitydowntown.org.

Publicity Help Needed

Beginning immediately.  Consider your facebook contacts, your google skills, and your connections to soccer teams, baseball, cheerleading, YMCA, Scouts, dance, and all the extra curricular activities in which you or your child participate.  You are ready to coordinate the publicity necessary for Vacation Bible School.  We need help NOW.  Contact Deaconess Liz: eborth@trinitydowntown.org or 407-488-1919 X 127.

What about Fido and Fluffy?

In a domestic violent and abusive home, pets can also be threatened or used as objects for dominating and submissive behavior. The staggering statistics show 48% of survivors delay leaving an abusive situation for fear their pets will be harmed and 88% of pets living in domestic violence homes are abused.  Harbor House is the only shelter in Central Florida with a kennel for pets of domestic violence survivors.  In our backyard, the gift of peace is present for us to support. Paws for Peace has been the recipient of gifts from Trinity’s Vacation Bible School, School Chapel Offering, and Ladies’ Bunco Group.  On Saturday, April 25 beginning with 8:00 a.m. registration, a $20.00 donation will enter you into the Fifth Annual Paws for Peace Walk at Blue Jacket Park, 2501 General Rees Ave. in Orlando.  Check out harborhousefl.com/pawsforpeace for more information.

Not the new mailing address, but a great place to direct young people.  At our first Youth Ministry Team meeting, our enthused and energetic youth leaders shared the direction our young people have chosen for their revitalized youth group.  The high school students decided  1 Timothy 4:12 gives clear direction for them as teens. Youth leaders and High School Bible class teachers, Laura Ramiz and Mike Miessler, are able to attend a Lutheran Youth Leader’s conference in July.  Please help support their opportunity to be Christ-centered leaders by sharing a monetary gift.  Checks or cash in your weekly offering envelope should be marked “Youth Leadership”.

Lutheran Services Florida

3,950,438 Syrian refugees have had to flee their country.  Time and again Syrian Christians must renounce their faith or die.  Many refugees have been living in a tent for more than 5 years with little food, no work, and no hope.  Lutheran Services Florida in partnership with LIRS and congregations across the State help these families begin a new life in America.  Let God use your hands to bring healing, hope, and help to these innocent victims of war.  For more information please contact Steve Cecchetti, LSF Director of Development, at 407-878-8397 or scecchetti@lsfnet.org.

Voters Meeting this Sunday at 12:30 in the Sanctuary to Elect:

March 18 Update to the Nominations for Trinity Downtown Leadership

To the Members of Trinity Lutheran Church and School,

Please note the following changes to the initial slate as of March 18, 2015:

  • Catherine Simmons has been added as a candidate for Leadership Council Member at Large.
  • Brendan O’Brien has been added as a candidate for Elder
  • Don Behrmann has withdrawn, with regrets, as a candidate for Leadership Council Member at Large because of work obligations.
  • As a clarification on the Member at Large opening positions:  since Ted Lange (currently a Member at Large) is the candidate for President, the Nominating Committee recommends that Rocky Smothers be elected to complete the final year of Ted’s Member at Large position in order to retain historical insight and experience.  For the other two Member at Large positions, the Nominating Committee recommends a vote to elect two of the four candidates (Wendy Havens, Susan Roby, David Tesch, and Catherine Simmons).

As Chair of the 2015 Nominating Committee and in accordance with Trinity’s Constitution and By Laws, I submit the following listing as the Committee’s slate of nominees for the open Leadership Council and Elder positions, presented to the congregation on February 22, 2015 and posted by February 27, 2015.  Published postings are placed for public viewing in the Trinity Weekly (both email and printed), the bulletin board in the Loggia area adjacent to the School Office, and on the TLCS Website, at TrinityDowntown.com under Member Resources/Official Reports.

“Meet” the Member at Large Nominees

On April 19, 2015 we will be electing officers as well as two Members at Large who will represent Trinity members on the Leadership Council.  Please read the following statements from each of our four Member at Large nominees to aid in your decision/voting process.

Wendy Havens

My name is Wendy Havens, and I have been married to Eric for 28 years.  We have 2 grown sons, Josh and Luke; 2 young grandchildren, Bailey and Aiden; and we are a foster family to a 3 year old boy, Osee.  We have been members of Trinity for 4 years and are involved in many things here.  I am involved in the choir, VBS, and reading for services on Sunday mornings. Eric is an Elder, Usher, member of the Building Task Force, and member of the Thursday morning Men’s Bible Breakfast.  We have also been involved in small group Bible studies.

Eric & I are very supportive of the CDC/School programs here at Trinity.  We have been blessed over these past 4 years by the members and programs here at Trinity, and I believe that it is time to give back and help to spread the love of God into the neighborhoods surrounding Trinity.

Susan Roby

Married to Ron.  Parents of 3 adult children, all graduates of Trinity School. We have 5 grandchildren.  Graduate of UF with degree in English.  MA in counseling from Rollins College. Retired as (non rostered) Guidance Counselor at Luther High School in Orlando.

Member of Trinity since 1981. Served as President of Congregation from 1999 to 2003. Have served on various church boards over the last 35 years, as well as on the Board of Lutheran Counseling Services from 1996 to 2014.  President of LCS Board for 9 years.  Currently completing 2 year term on Leadership Council.   Member of Altar Guild.  Led an adult Bible Study for 25 years.  (Monday night Bible Study)  During this time of transition at Trinity, I believe it is important to provide stability and consistency in Leadership.  I'm excited about the steps Leadership has taken in the past 3 months and look forward with joy to our future as we continue to proclaim the Gospel in downtown Orlando.

Catherine Simmons

I am originally from Orlando, and am married with two sons, ages five and nine.  My husband David Simmons, our children, and I love God.  We have felt fortunate to be members of Trinity, and have attended worship here for nearly nine years now.  Both of my sons have been blessed to be baptized at Trinity and have been educated and loved at TLS from infancy through VPK.  My youngest son, Daniel, is currently in VPK with Ms. Colby and Ms. Stacy.   My oldest son, Sam, began at TLS nine years ago, and is now a successful fourth grader at Lake Eola Charter School.  I have an undergraduate degree in elementary education, a masters degree in school counseling, have worked in both roles for years in the past, and hold current Florida educator certificates with the FLDOE in both areas. Over the last eleven years, I’ve worked with hundreds of schools through my work as a state director at an educational nonprofit.   I have participated in many of Trinity’s events including Trinity Shares Christmas, numerous campus clean-up days, and the TLS Silent Auction.  I have been working with Dr. Kevin Brockberg, Cathy Fuller, and the state on getting more voucher/scholarship funding for TLS and have purchased Step Up for Students scholarship banners for the school.

Recognizing the blessings Dr. Brockberg has brought to Trinity with his understanding of instruction and school leadership, I’ve shared ideas with him regarding increasing the impact that Trinity has on not only its students and parishioners, but our larger community and world.  I get excited brainstorming the possibilities for sharing God’s love and bettering the reality of those with whom we share this world. I am especially interested in strengthening the outreach that Trinity provides to the homeless population in downtown Orlando.   I am honored to have been nominated to serve on Trinity’s Leadership Council.  If I am selected, I will do my best to strengthen and expand the realization of Trinity’s mission, to bring people one step closer to Jesus.  May God bless you.

David Tesch

I have been married for 24 years and my wife and I have four children, 2 girls (ages 22 and 19) and 2 boys (ages 16 and 13). All have been baptized and confirmed (or about to be confirmed) at Trinity.  My wife and I have been members of Trinity for 23 years. We have both served in various capacities at Trinity, including stewardship committee, Technology Task Force, usher team, vice president and president of the PTL, Altar Guild, Homeroom Mom, Board of School Ministries (6 years), and the Parish Planning Council (4 years, previous incarnation of the Leadership Committee). I have also served on the call committee for Trinity’s last Youth leader and the call committee for the Youth and Family pastor. All four of our children attended TLS and we have been heavily involved with the youth, chaperoning for many events including the Middle School Youth Gathering and the National High School Youth Gathering.  My family has a deep love of Trinity. We have watched Trinity both grow and shrink through the years. We have made deep friendships through the small groups and Bible studies that were once an important part of Trinity’s culture. We miss these aspects and features of Trinity and we feel it is now time to work to get them back in place. We understand where Trinity came from and what it has been through for the last several years and we would like the opportunity to be a part of Trinity’s revitalization.

Trinity Lutheran School’s Child Development Center--Five Stars and 100%

This past week the CDC had its baseline assessment for the Quality Rating Insurance Scale (QRIS). The QRIS assessment covers Environment. Ratios, Curriculum, Staffing - credentials, in-service hours, Family Engagement and Administration; it wass very thorough!  We earned a 5+ Star rating.  We were only 2 points away from a perfect score.  We also had our State Curriculum Review and we earned a 100%.

CDC Executive Director, Patty Moser shares, “I am so proud of our school and our staff members in particular who continue to strive for excellence and go above and beyond the minimum requirements and provide outstanding care and education for the children of Trinity.  This is another reminder of how blessed we all are to be part of this community.”

Trinity's CDC has  also been selected by the the Nemours Collaborative to present our story of success to their National Office.  When you see the great program enhancements that have been made at Trinity in such a short period of time it is really something of which we can all be proud.  Special thanks goes to our healthy food chef, Rich Poole, and to each and every one of our teachers for communicating to families about the changes, preparing healthy snacks, and modeling good choices for the children.

As always, we thank our Trinity CDC families; we could never accomplish these things without your support and commitment to Trinity.  Keep helping us spread the News!

Camp Trinity--Summer Camp Registration is now open

Camp Trinity has a wonderful summer planned for your children. Forms and information about the weekly camp themes are available in the school office and online.  Please register early ($100 registration fee is reduced to $75 until May 1st). We anticipate a healthy enrollment this summer and we want to be sure to save space for your child.  E-mail Julia Malenke with any questions( jmalenke@trinitydowntown.org)

K-8 Enrollment at Trinity is now open for the 2015-2016 School Year

Nestled in Downtown Orlando, parents trust the nurture and educational training Trinity Lutheran School provides for Infants through Eighth Grade. Whether in our cradling infant nurseries, cozy child care rooms, vibrant primary classrooms, or pulsing middle school, parents know we wrap our students in the loving arms of Jesus Christ. Our secure five-acre campus provides ample space not only for our K-8 classrooms but also for our state-of-the-art Child Development Center,  full size sports field & gymnasium, science and portable technology lab, art studio, and an historic church sanctuary for our weekly chapel worship. Music? Spanish? We have those, too!

Our Kindergarten to Eighth Grade academic program is dynamic, forged upon the skills and experiences of our highly-qualified, licensed, and incredibly caring faculty.

Ask any student in Kindergarten, and each would declare the following:

  • We know Three Big Rules by heart: Respect, Responsibility, Hard Work…we sing a song about this!
  • We love Authors: Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, Leo Lionni, Mo Willems, Ourselves (We are young authors ourselves!), and many, many more!
  • We practice Math: Counting, Grouping, Patterning, and Problem Solving
  • We explore Science:  observing  “Animals Two by Two,” “Materials in our World,”  “Trees and Weather”
  • We affirm Faith and Religion: Jesus loves me! Jesus loves you! I love my neighbor as I love myself!
  • We use Technology every day: Interactive SMART Board, iPads in our Interest Centers

And to prepare our graduates for high school and beyond, our exit standards encompass these rigorous pursuits:

  • Algebra I & Spanish I: With successful exit exams, our graduates then enroll in high school Geometry and Spanish II as freshmen in high school.
  • Advanced Topics in Physical, Life, and Earth Sciences: Our students know Science as inquiry!
  • Religion: We draw each student toward conviction and the ensuing confidence to declare, “I know what I believe and why I believe it!”
  • Learning with a Chromebook: Throughout Middle School it’s more than a device; this laptop is their own personal responsibility, integrated into every core subject.
  • Field Experiences away from Trinity: Adventures in learning at St. Augustine, the Kennedy Space Center, Driftwood Education Center at St. Simon’s Island, the Florida Keys Marine Lab, and Washington D.C.

You may wonder now what comes in between Kindergarten and Eighth Grade Graduation:
