James Majka

One of our regular “friends of Trinity” members passed away on Sunday, April 6.  James Majka was a frequent visitor to Trinity’s Saturday night services.  He was the gentle and quiet man sitting in the side chapel with the Good Shepherd.  Many of us didn’t know his name, but his face, his bicycle and his quirky hat with the rear view mirror will never be forgotten.  In the last year, we have missed James because he found a loving home with Pathways in Altamonte Springs.  In the last days of his illness, James was frequently comforted and visited by Pathways residents, his good friend Christy, and ministry staff of Trinity.  We thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit in James Majka.

Candlelight Procession and “Redressing the Altar”

The Easter Vigil is a service held in Christian churches as the first official celebration of theResurrection of Jesus.  Historically, it is during this service that people arebaptized and that adultcatechumans are received into full communion with the Church. It is held in the hours of darkness between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise onEaster Day  — most commonly in the evening of Holy Saturday — and is the first celebration of Easter, days traditionally being considered to begin at sunset.  It is the first celebration of the Gloria, missing during the forty days of Lent, and marks  the first use of the "Alleluia"! The service begins with candlelight outside the darkened sanctuary where we reenact coming to the tomb in the early morning. The altar will be “redressed” in preparation for the Easter morning services of Holy Communion. The service continues with stories from the Bible which show repeatedly, God delivering His people, just as He has once again delivered us through another Good Friday into Easter morning.

Trinity will celebrate the Easter Vigil, 6:00 p.m. Saturday, April 19.

Bunco is so exciting!

bunco ladiesThere is a group of Trinity women who come and bring friends once a month to play a simple game, share delicious snacks, and laugh loudly.  If you’ve never played bunco, you don’t have to worry.  It is ridiculously easy to catch on, especially when there are so many loving people willing to help you enjoy a respite from worldly pressures.  Last evening, 16 women filled the church conference room and more than ½ the group was mother/daughter pairs!

Instead of sharing gift prizes with each other PAWS for Peace received our generous donations, so we are publically announcing the winners!  Most Buncos: Angie Friedel    Most Mini-Buncos: Liz Wise & Sara Friedel    High Score: Judy Webber     Low Score: Liz Borth

Next month the fun continues on Thursday, May 8 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the church conference room in the Magnolia Building.  Contact Elizabeth Cohen for more information: eawiese35@gmail.com

The Cross is not a Decoration

Trinity School is not a child-care or elementary education center making a difference in the life of children for a short period in their lives.  Well, yes, it is an academic instructional center, BUT TRINITY’S CORE AND FOUNDATION IS JESUS CHRIST.  So, as the church season of Lent is a time for focusing on the cross and Christ’s sacrificial and loving journey for us to punishment and death, every student from infant through 8th grade has participated in making the cross banners displayed in the church sanctuary.  Look around the sanctuary and see the traditional simple Latin cross designed by infants and toddlers in the Magnolia building, 2-year old children in the boardwalk classrooms.  VPK classrooms discovered different cross symbols and designed banners with much thought and artistry.   The “T” or tau cross glitters as a symbolic reminder of the pole God lifted in the desert to save His people from poison snake bites.  Children delighted with sticky fingers to create their Coptic Cross design with a circle in the center to remind us of the eternal life we have because of Jesus.  Ancient Egypt culture is reflected in the Ansated cross, so a rough burlap material made this a stand out display; the eye at the top reminds us no one can enter the kingdom of God except through Jesus Christ.  Third grade had an easy, but most interesting Voided cross to design. The empty space reminds us Christ left the cross to proclaim victory over sin, death and the devil.  The cross is a reminder of bitter suffering and unjust punishment, willingly accepted for all humanity by our God who loves unconditionally and completely.  Trinity School makes this teaching the foundation in all activities.  Any thoughts or comments, contact Deaconess Liz: eborth@trinitydowntown.org

Creative Canvas

Despite the fact my grandfather’s paintings hang in St. Louis City Hall and my mother could capture the graceful movements of a dancer with her drawings, a 3-year old’s painted handprint is better than any canvas I have ever touched. But, I discovered with proper instruction and guidance, I can copy and be proud to display a beautiful painting.  I am proud to display my interpretation in the narthex where you can pick up your personal invitation to the quarterly “Supper & a Speaker” event on Thursday, April 24. Cost is $35.00 and reservations are necessary to insure everyone has a canvas.  To pre-register, go to www.wineandcanvas.com/private-events-calendar-orlando-fl.html click on April 24th (Private Event for Trinity Women) and sign up!  Meet in Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. (this is a ½ hour earlier than previous suppers) and bring heavy hors d’ourves for our feasting together. For more information call or email Deaconess Liz: 407-488-1919 X127 eborth@trinitydowntown.org.

Don't Miss It!

Don’t miss the K-8 events posted in the Trinity Events section!  We’d love to see you there!

Lord make me a servant

Our VPK class recently sang the song “Make Me a Servant” when they lead chapel at school.  Our message was about Lent and we shared with the school our plans for giving up things to raise money to take breakfast to Compassion Corner.  Over the last few weeks the children, and their families, have given up many different things from applesauce to newspapers and we were able to raise almost $100!  This past Thursday we made 30 bag breakfasts which included sausage sandwiches, granola bars, cheese sticks, fruit and a prayer that the children wrote.  We packed up breakfast and walked over to share food, songs, and love.  The children sang, and did sign language, to Amazing Grace and passed out breakfast and Easter wishes to the people visiting Compassion Corner.  It is such a gift to everyone.  We all just took a moment to be together in God’s love and the smiles were very genuine.  We were all happy to be servants!
